Today Baku hosted the ceremony of laying the foundation of a thermal power plant with a capacity of 1280 MW, which will be built in Mingechevir, the city of power engineers in Azerbaijan.
The ceremony, which took place in the Gulustan Palace, was attended by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
According to Ilham Aliyev, the construction of this power plant, the second largest power plant in Azerbaijan, will cost about $400 million.
“Currently, the generation capacity of Azerbaijan’s power plants is 7,200 MW, of which 3,400 MW have been created over the past 20 years and 34 power plants have been built,” the President of Azerbaijan said.
The power plant will be built by Azerenergy OJSC, and 4 turbines and generators for the station will be supplied by the Italian company Ansaldo Energia.
The agreement includes the supply of four gas turbines AE94.3A, for a value of beyond 160 million euros, from the Italian company.
The AE94.3A gas turbine produces 340 MW of electrical power, with an efficiency of 40.3% in standard conditions. Ansaldo Energia has installed 80 combined cycle units and 16 open cycle units in 16 countries worldwide.
The project will be financed as follows: 60% from Azerenergy’s own resources, 40% from credit resources.
According to the work schedule, the power plant will be put into operation in 2025.
“Azerbaijan is a strategic country for Italy and Ansaldo Energia has shown, since 2020, a strong interest in the Azerbaijani market, promoting, over the years, numerous high-profile institutional meetings with top-level figures. We have identified significant business opportunities and, consequently, we have chosen to open our own branch on site, to contribute to the country’s energy development”, says Stefano Santinelli, Chief of International & Public Affairs.
Recall that on December 18, 2020, Azerenergy OJSC and the Italian company Ansaldo Energia signed a contract for the supply of power equipment for substations with a capacity of 110 kW, which were built in the territories of Azerbaijan liberated from occupation – in Aghdam, Fizuli, Gubadli and Kalbajar.
The representative office of Ansaldo Energia was registered in Azerbaijan on July 30, 2021. The official representative of the company is Stefano Bogia, an Italian citizen.
59.9% stake in Ansaldo Energia S.p.A. owned by the CDP Equity fund, which is part of the Cassa Depositi e Prestiti group, another 40.1% is owned by Shanghai Electric, the world leader in mechanical engineering for the electric power industry.
