The creation of new generating capacities on the territory of the Azerbaijan Thermal Power Plant (TPP) will save up to 800 mcm of gas per year, said the head of Azerenergy OJSC Baba Rzayev.
“New capacities of 1280 MW will be created on the territory of the 7th and 8th power units of the TPP. Thus, the capacity of power units will be increased from 600 MW to 1880 MW,” Rzayev said in his article published in the Azerbaijan newspaper.
According to him, this will reduce the consumption of standard fuel for the production of 1 kWh of electricity from 335 grams to 225 grams. This, in turn, will save up to 800 mcm of natural gas per year.
“This means that investments in the modernization of thermal power plants will pay off in a maximum of 6 years. In addition, the formation of a new generating complex will increase efficiency from 18% to 56%, which, in turn, means the production of 12.5 billion kWh of electricity per year,” the head of Azerenergy said.
It should be noted that on October 25, 2022, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev ordered the modernization of the Azerbaijan Thermal Power Plant.
According to the order, a “rational modernization” of the Azerbaijan TPP is planned with the use of modern technologies.
Azerbaijan TPP has 8 blocks of 300 MW of installed capacity each. The station produces about 45% of all electricity generated in Azerbaijan. It mainly uses natural gas as fuel.
