Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said that Azerbaijan plans to use renewable energy sources to the maximum extent in ten years and reduce the consumption of natural gas inside the country.
“I think this is part of our common green agenda and our sense of responsibility, because a country rich in fossil fuels should be at the forefront of countries in the process of transition to green energy. We are doing this not because we lack traditional resources, but because we want to contribute using financing, using the revenues we receive from the sale of oil and gas to invest in renewable energy sources and create a common understanding of their need,” Aliyev said in an interview with Euronews.
The President noted that every year in Baku there is a decrease in the level of the Caspian Sea: “Everyone who lives on the seashore sees this, even here in the center of Baku. We are witnessing dangerous consequences of climate change, namely: less water in our rivers, less snow in our mountains, less water in the Caspian Sea. And if we don’t solve this problem with inspiration and a sense of duty, then everyone will suffer from this.”
Aliyev added that Azerbaijan has a very ambitious agenda of projects for the production of renewable energy resources.
“The potential of the Caspian Sea of Azerbaijan is 157 GW, which is based on the assessment of the International Finance Corporation. We have already begun to follow this important path. We plan to use renewable energy sources to the maximum extent in ten years and reduce the consumption of natural gas inside the country,” the Azerbaijani leader stressed.
