Turkestan region is the leader in Kazakhstan in terms of the capacity of renewable energy sources, Vice Minister of Energy Alibek Zhamauov said at a meeting with residents of the region. According to him, there are 21 renewable energy facilities in the region with a total capacity of 278 MW, including 8 solar power plants with a capacity of 16 MW and 13 condensing power plants with a capacity of 262 MW.
“By 2025, it is planned to build seven facilities with a capacity of 48 MW. Of these, it is planned to launch four solar power plants with a capacity of 8 MW and three condensing power plants with a capacity of 40 MW,” the Vice Minister of Energy stressed.
Last week, Energy Minister Almasadam Satkaliyev told a meeting of the parliamentary commission that in 2023, Kazakhstan produced a total of 112.8 billion kWh of electricity, but the volume of consumption was at the level of 115 billion kWh. Kazakhstan plans to fully provide itself with electricity through the development of “green” energy.
According to the Minister, electricity generation in Kazakhstan is conducted by 222 electric power plants, of which 146 renewable energy facilities with a total capacity of 2.8 GW. At the same time, the installed capacity of renewable energy in Kazakhstan has increased by more than 16 times since 2014 (from 178 MW to 2,868 MW).
In 2023, the volume of electricity generated by green energy facilities in Kazakhstan amounted to 6.675 billion kWh (WPP – 3,824.99 million kWh, SES – 1,853.95 million kWh, mini-hydroelectric power plants – 993.87 million kWh, bioelectric power plants – 2.71 million kWh) or 5.92% of the total production of electric energy, while considering large hydroelectric power plants, it amounted to 13.7%.
It should be noted that Kazakhstan, among the former republics of the Soviet Union, is second only to Russia in terms of green energy production, which in 2023 managed to produce 210.8 billion kWh from renewable energy sources (excluding hydroelectric power plants – 7.8 billion kWh).
