Romania is considering the possibility of diversifying sources of gas supplies in the context of sanctions against Russia, Azerbaijan is among the possible suppliers
According to Romanian media, Bucharest is looking for sources to replace Russian gas. Romania currently meets 20% of its gas demand through supplies from Gazprom.
Romanian Energy Minister Virgil-Daniel Popescu said in March 2022 that Bucharest was interested in importing gas from Azerbaijan.
In addition, SOCAR (State Oil Company of Azerbaijan) and the Romanian Transgaz in March 2022 extended for 6 years – until 2029 – the validity of the Memorandum of Mutual Cooperation in the gas sector.
