American business wants to enter the gas transportation system of Ukraine and this explains a number of norms of the US sanctions law, an informed source in the energy industry told the Russian agency Prime.
“According to available information, there are American companies, American business, which itself has in view to enter the GTS of Ukraine and actually sit between the supplier, that is, Russia, and the consumer, that is, the countries of Western Europe, and gain additional levers of influence,” he said.
According to him, the Ukrainian gas transportation system is subject to fragmentation, including privatization and entry of external investors. “But this GTS is a value, provided that the GTS serves as a transit bridge between the Russian Federation and the EU countries. If we build alternative ways of supplying gas to Western Europe, in fact the Ukrainian GTS will become a set of rusty pipes,” he concluded.
* On July 27, the US Senate passed a law on sanctions against Russia, Iran and the DPRK.
The bill suggests that Trump can impose sanctions on persons who intend to invest in the construction of Russian export pipelines more than $ 5 million per year or $ 1 million at a time or to provide projects with services, technology, and provide information support. At the same time, the US will continue to oppose the construction of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline.
