The total volume of oil production from the “Western Azeri” platform on the Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli block has reached 1 billion barrels since its commissioning. This is the second platform on the ACG block, which has exceeded the mark of 1 billion barrels in total oil production, the press service of BP-Azerbaijan (operator of ACG).
The first platform to reach this milestone was “Central Azeri” in July 2021.
“We hope that this great streak of success in ACG will continue,” said Elkhan Mammadov, BP’s vice president for production in the Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey region.
According to BP, the first oil from the “Western Azeri” platform was received in December 2005. Currently, about 200 people work on the platform, most of whom, including both heads of the platform, are Azerbaijanis.
“Since 2005, 40 wells and many side shafts have been drilled from the platform. Of the 35 operating wells, 26 are production wells and 9 are water injection wells. One of the first wells commissioned in 2005 is well C-06. Initially, this well produced 35 thousand barrels of oil and is currently one of the most productive wells on the platform. To date, a total of 80 million barrels of oil have been produced from this well,” the information says.
According to the company, currently daily production from the Western Azeri platform is 85 thousand barrels.
It should be noted that in January-September 2023, oil production at the Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli (ACG) block of fields amounted to about 100 million barrels (14 million tons), by 12.3% lower than in the first 9 months of 2022. In 2022, oil production at ACG amounted to 152 million barrels.
The contract for the development of the Azeri, Chirag and deepwater Gunashli fields was signed on September 20, 1994 and entered into force on December 12 of the same year. This agreement was due to expire in 2024. However, on September 14, 2017, a new contract for the development of the ACG block, calculated until 2050, was signed in Baku.
Under the new contract, the share of British BP (the project operator) is 30.37%, SOCAR (25%), Hungarian MOL (9.57%), American ExxonMobil (6.79%), Indian ONGC (2.31%), Japanese Inpex Corp. (9.31%) and ITOCHU Oil (3.65%), Norwegian Equinor (7.27%), Turkish TPAO (5.73%).
