Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev said that Kazakhstan could drop out of the Eurasian Union, which is also comprised of Russia and Belarus. Mass media suggested that he has reacted to the words of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who expressed doubt of Kazakhstan’s state system.
Nazarbayev said in his interview to Habar in Astana: “If the rules, which have been earlier established in the treaty, are not carried out in reality, Kazakhstan has a full right to give up membership in the Eurasian Economic Union. Kazakhstan will never be a part of the organizations, which threaten Kazakhstan’s independence.”
“Our independence is our best treasure, for which our grandfathers have fought. At first, we will never give up our independence and secondly, we will make everything possible to defend it,” Herald CIS quoted Nazarbayev as saying.
At the Youth Forum Seliger on August 29, 2014 Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Kazakhstan President Nazarbayev has created the state on the territory, “where the Kazakh state has never been before.”
A day earlier leader of the Liberal-Democratic party of Russia Vladimir Zhirinovsky said in his interview to Echo of Moscow radio station that after the events in Ukraine Russia should pay attention to Kazakhstan, where anti-Russian sentiments are observed.
