The price of electricity from renewable sources (RES) in Russia is already twice lower than when generating from coal-fired power plants, and therefore in all regions where there is the required natural potential, it is advisable to consider prioritizing carbon-free technologies, Alexey Zhikharev, Director of the Association for the Development of Renewable Energy (ARVE) announced.
According to him, the gap in the price of renewable energy projects makes it possible to compensate for “weather dependence” and, accordingly, uneven power generation due to the construction of new power lines and the use of energy storage systems based on both electrochemical and hydrogen technologies.
According to the results of 2023, electricity production in Russia amounted to 1.178 trillion kWh, which is 0.7% higher than in 2022. At the same time, thermal power plants generated 750 billion kWh (+1.6%), nuclear power plants – 217 billion kWh (-2.8%), hydroelectric power plants – 203 billion kWh (+1.7%). By the end of 2023, renewable energy generation facilities produced 7.8 billion kWh (the leader among post-Soviet countries in the production of “green” energy), reducing the figure by 8.3%.
