Technical and other shortcomings in the activities of Azerenergy OJSC caused the accident in the energy system of Azerbaijan, which took place in July 2018.
This conclusion was reached by the State Commission established on behalf of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and led by First Deputy Prime Minister Yagub Eyyubov
Recall that on the night of July 3, 2018 an accident occurred in the Azerbaijan Thermal Power Plant (TPP) in Mingachevir. As a result of the accident, there were serious problems in the energy system of Azerbaijan, and in 39 cities and regions of the republic, including Baku and Gyanja, there were interruptions in electricity supply. In the evening hours on July 3, power outages were repeated.
As it was noted in the message of the Administration of the President of Azerbaijan on September 4, over the past period the State Commission attracted local and foreign experts, as well as representatives of relevant state bodies and structures, and carried out an investigation of the causes of the accident, preparing a comprehensive and extensive conclusion, which reflected the existing shortcomings and problems that led to the accident, and presented it to the President of Azerbaijan.
In the prepared conclusion, as one of the main causes of the accident, it is shown that Azerenergy was not prepared for the accident at the proper level and could not adequately respond to it due to a number of technical and other shortcomings in its activities, and it also made a number of other mistakes, which resulted in the accident in the country’s energy system.
According to the Administration, the President of Azerbaijan got acquainted with the final conclusion of the State Commission and freed Etibar Pirverdiyev from the post of the President of Azerenergy OJSC for the shortcomings in his work.
Note that Pirverdiyev at a meeting with the President on July 4 said that in recent days, due to weather conditions, there was an increase in electricity consumption in the country by 40%, which was the reason for the accident at TPPs. However, the head of state Ilham Aliyev interrupted Pirverdiyev’s speech and said that heat and electricity consumption growth cannot be the cause of the blackout of the power system. “You should be ashamed of the people for the inconvenience caused. The accident caused damage not only to citizens, but also to the economy. SOCAR had serious losses,” the Azerbaijani President said then.
