Gas transit via Ukraine decreased by 19% due to the redirection of Russian gas to the pipeline Nord Stream and download of the OPAL pipeline, the state gas transport operator Naftogaz Ukraine said.
Nord Stream transports gas from Russia through a pipeline across the Baltic Sea to the shores of Europe, and OPAL is a continued overland pipeline through which Russian gas is transported further into the EU.
Since December 22, when the use of the alternative transit route Nord Stream – OPAL started, the transportation volume has increased from 57.1 mcm to 80.5 mcm per day (41% increase).
During this time, the volume of Russian gas in the Ukrainian gas transportation system (GTS) in the direction of Slovakia decreased from 148.9 mcm to 120.8 mcm per day (-19%).
“As a result, Gazprom increased its physical loading of the OPAL gas pipeline from 50% to more than 80% of its capacity,” Naftogaz reported.
