“Having six more platforms online in South Pars gas field by the end of the current Iranian calendar year (March 20, 2017), the daily output of the field will reach 540 million cubic meters (mcm),” an official with Pars Oil and Gas Company said on Sunday.
According to Shana news agency, Farrokh Alikhani said that for the time being, 415mcm to 430mcm of gas is extracted from South Pars per day. Once the six new platforms come on stream, the output will rise by 100-110mcm per day, he noted.
“Some 40 other platforms should be installed in South Pars,” he added.
Explaining the ongoing installation and operation procedures of the six new platforms in the gas field, the official said that platform 19A has been fixed for a week and platforms B18, B17, B19 and B20 will be fixed based on schedule following the installation of platform 21.
South Pars field, which Iran shares with Qatar in the Persian Gulf, is estimated to contain a significant amount of natural gas, accounting for about eight percent of the world’s reserves, and approximately 18 billion barrels of condensate.
Iran, which sits on the world’s largest gas reserves, intends to enhance gas production by increasing foreign and domestic investment, especially in its South Pars gas field.
The country produced 192.5 billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas in 2015, up 5.7 percent from 182bcm in 2014, British Petroleum reported in its June 2016 Statistical Review of World Energy.
Natural gas output in Iran also witnessed rise in 2014 from 166.8 bcm in 2013, according to the BP’s report.
Meanwhile, the country maintained its rank as the third natural gas producer in the world after the U.S. and Russia for the second consecutive year.
