By 2020 Turkmenistan could double gas export to China, said Marc Antoine Il Mazzega, Regional Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA) in Russia.
“Turkmenistan is going to increase export to China. We forecast that gas export to this country will be doubled by 2020,” he said at the CIS Oil & Gas Summit 2015.
He said the forecast is based on the huge investments into the Turkmenistan fields and their significant production capacities. “If all the projects are implemented, this will affect the dynamics at the gas market,” he added.
According to the presentation of the IEA representative, in 2014 gas production in Turkmenistan totaled 70 billion cub.m. and by 2020 it will grow up to 90 billion cub.m. In 2014 the volume of export totaled about 40 billion cub.m., of which almost 20 billion cub.m. fell to China.
Il-Mazzega believes that at the world market the Turkmenistan gas has the greatest potential. “Most likely Turkmenistan gas will not be exported to Baumgartner, but it could be exported to Turkey at a competitive price and there it will have to compete with the Russian gas,” speaker said.
It is supposed that role of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan in Turkmen gas transportation will grow, while Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan will become the transit countries.
