Russia and Iran signed on Nov.11 a number of documents in Moscow to expand their cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, RIA Novosti reported.
These documents will give opportunity to construct eight new power units at a nuclear plant in Iran using Russian technology, according to RIA Novosti.
The sides have signed a protocol to the intergovernmental agreement signed on Aug.25 1992 between Russia and Iran to construct a nuclear power plant on Iran’s territory and an interagency memorandum of understanding to expand cooperation in using nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
The documents were signed by the CEO of ROSATOM Sergey Kirienko and Iranian Vice President, Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, Ali Akbar Salehi.
The sides intend to cooperate in constructing eight power units [four units on the site of Bushehr power plant and four on another site) with Russian designed VVER-type reactors (Pressurized Water Reactor) in Iran on a turn-key basis, according to the protocol.
Under the protocol, the nuclear fuel for the nuclear plant will be produced by the Russian side throughout the entire operational lifetime of the eight new power units. The used nuclear fuel will be returned to Russia for processing and storing.
