Slavenko Terzich, Serbian Ambassador to Russia, said that construction of the South Stream gas pipeline will begin till the end of this year
South Stream is the national priority project of Serbian Republic. Serbia has an agreement on exceptional importance of the project not only for Serbia, but also for the entire Balkan region and majority part of Europe. We believe that South Stream is not only Russian, but also the European energy project. There are no doubts about construction of the South Stream. We expect beginning of construction of the South Stream gas pipeline at the end of this year.
It is logical that we cannot build the pipeline without Bulgaria. I am aware of the Bulgarian government’s hesitation. But as far as I know, neither Bulgarian government, nor its opposition is opposed to the South Stream. I know that Bulgarian President also supports South Stream.
We believe that considering importance of the project for Bulgaria, Serbia. Hungary, Croatia, Austria, Italy and other countries, the decision must be made in the interests of all these nations. I think that the decision will be made after the elections in Bulgaria and we expect that it will be in favor of the South Stream.
It is a big mistake to use such vital important energy projects in the geopolitical clashes. This is a vitally question. Therefore, we need to take into consideration interests of these nations and interests of these countries.
At a press conference Terzich also said that Serbia will not join the EU sanctions against Russia.
