On August 9, 2014 Russian President Vladimir Putin has launched the exploration drilling on West Alpha platform on the most northern well in Russia – Universitetnskaya-1 in the Kara Sea. Rosneft President Igor Sechin and ExxonMobil Russia President Glen Waller have attended the ceremony.
Sechin said that during two months it is planned to carry out the exploration drilling to confirm continuation of oil and gas bearing structures of western Siberia on the shelf.
“As a result of these operations we hope to discover a new Kara offshore oil-bearing province, resources of which, according to the experts, will exceed those of such oil and gas bearing provinces, as Gulf of Mexico, Brazilian shelf, shelf of Alaska and Canada and it will be comparable with the resources of Saudi Arabia,” Sechin added.
Rosneft and the US ExxonMobil will start exploration drilling on the Kara Sea against the background of the western sanctions against Russian companies.
