A strategic importance of the Caspian Sea is connected with huge hydrocarbon resources it possesses, said experts of the US Stratford analytical centre.
The Caspian Sea fields are rich in oil an d natural gas, reads the information posted on the Centre’s web site.
The information reads that numerous oil and gas projects are implemented in the region and all Caspian states are involved in the hydrocarbon production.
“The talks on the Caspian Sea status have been going on for almost 20 years. Numerous proposals have been considered, but five Caspian basin states still cannot find an acceptable solution to the problem,” say experts of the Centre.
The information reads that Europe is especially interested in development of oil and gas fields in the Caspian Sea.
“In particular, Europe is interested in hydrocarbon resources of Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan, which will be delivered via a strategically important Southern Gas Corridor, which is considered as a possibility to eliminate energy dependence on Russia,” reads the statement.
The statement reads that Iran and Russia are opposed to the trans-Caspian project, which creates tense geopolitical situation in the region. “The Caspian Sea has turned into an important field of competition between Russia and the West. To a certain degree events in Ukraine have increased importance of the Caspian Sea,” reads the statement.
