Job Summary
ABB is seeking a skilled Project Engineer to support onshore and offshore operations in Azerbaijan. The role focuses on maximizing ABB system availability and minimizing production losses through expert delivery of installation, commissioning, and lifecycle services for ABB Integrated Control and Safety Systems. The successful candidate will conduct site surveys at both onshore and offshore facilities, provide technical support, and mentor local engineering talent.
Key Responsibilities
Onshore & Offshore Operations – Site Support
Conduct site surveys at onshore and offshore facilities to assess system conditions and requirements
Maximize ABB system availability and minimize lost production caused by system failures
Perform on-site troubleshooting and emergency response for critical systems
Coordinate with onshore and offshore operations teams to plan maintenance activities
ABB Systems Delivery & Services
Deliver the full portfolio of ABB project services including installation, commissioning, and lifecycle services
Support Integrated Control and Safety Systems (ICSS) implementation and optimization
Execute periodical hardware and software modifications to enhance system performance
Maintain and update IO registers and system documentation
Conduct functional testing and validation of control systems
Technical Support & Troubleshooting
Perform fault finding within process control, safety, and Fire & Gas (F&G) systems
Diagnose and resolve hardware and software issues in ABB systems
Provide technical support during project execution ensuring all requirements are fulfilled
Implement corrective and preventive maintenance strategies
Interface with ABB global technical support teams when required
Project Management & Coordination
Execute projects on time, within budget, and to ABB quality standards
Coordinate with engineering, procurement, and operations teams
Prepare technical documentation, reports, and as-built drawings
Monitor project progress and proactively manage risks
Ensure compliance with HSE, quality, and regulatory requirements
Knowledge Transfer & Mentoring
Mentor Azeri National engineers and graduates
Develop training materials and conduct knowledge transfer sessions
Support local capacity building and skills development
Foster a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence
Required Qualifications
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation & Control, Automation Engineering, or related field
Relevant professional engineering certification or equivalent
Experience
3-7 years of hands-on experience with ABB control systems (800xA, AC800M, Symphony Plus, or similar)
Proven experience in onshore and/or offshore oil & gas, petrochemical, or process industries
Experience with installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting of DCS/ICSS/SIS systems
Demonstrated expertise in Fire & Gas (F&G) systems and safety instrumented systems (SIS)
Experience maintaining IO databases and system documentation
Technical Skills
Expert knowledge of ABB control systems architecture and configuration
Proficiency in fault finding and diagnostics (hardware & software)
Strong understanding of process control, safety systems, and F&G logic
Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, electrical schematics, and loop diagrams
Experience with control system programming and software modifications
Knowledge of fieldbus protocols (Foundation Fieldbus, HART, Profibus, Modbus)
Familiarity with offshore HSE requirements and permit-to-work systems
Preferred Qualifications
ABB certified engineer (System 800xA, AC800M etc)
IEC 61511 functional safety certification (FSEng, FSExp, or equivalent)
Offshore survival and safety training (BOSIET, HUET, or equivalent)
Experience with ABB Ability™ digital solutions
Knowledge of HAZOP, SIL verification, and safety lifecycle management
Azerbaijani and Russian language skills
Previous experience mentoring or training junior engineers
