TAP pipeline hits 50 Bcm milestone in gas exports to Europe

Volumes of Azeri natural gas shipped to Europe through the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) have hit 50 billion cubic metres, the pipeline’s operator said on Monday.

The total export milestone, reached less than five years after the start of commercial operations in 2020, shows TAP’s strategic role in strengthening Europe’s energy security and supporting its energy transition, managing director Luca Schieppati said.

The European leg of the Southern Gas Corridor, TAP, flows gas from Azerbaijan’s Shah Deniz field via Turkey, Greece, Albania and the Adriatic Sea, landing in southern Italy.

Since late 2020, it has delivered over 41.7 Bcm to Italy, 4.8 Bcm to Greece and 3.2 Bcm to Bulgaria.

“Reaching 50 Bcm is more than a milestone — it’s a clear demonstration of TAP’s strategic role,” said managing director Luca Schieppati.

“By […] delivering gas from a new source and a new route, TAP has helped diversify South-Eastern Europe’s energy mix and reduce reliance on heavier fossil fuels.”

TAP has operated beyond its nominal capacity since early 2022, responding to increased demand triggered by Europe’s energy crisis.

Head of commercial Marija Savova said the infrastructure flexed its operating setup to boost throughput while maintaining uninterrupted flows.

A capacity expansion is underway, with 1.2 Bcm per annum of additional long-term capacity expected from 2026. Further increases could follow, subject to market demand.

TAP is owned by BP, Socar, Snam, Fluxys and Enagas, each holding a 20% stake.
