The draft “General Scheme for the Placement of Electric Power Facilities Until 2042” proposes the construction of 11 new large and small nuclear power plants in Russia, in addition to those currently existing and under construction. The draft “General Scheme for the Placement of Electric Power Facilities Until 2042” was released for public discussion on Tuesday.
According to the project, new nuclear power plants will be built in the Rostov, Sverdlovsk, Chelyabinsk, and Tomsk regions, as well as in Primorsky, Krasnoyarsk, and Khabarovsk Territories, Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, and the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).
By 2036, the total installed capacity of all nuclear power plants in Russia is expected to reach 34,576 MW, which will account for 12.3% of the total installed capacity of the country’s power facilities. By 2042, this figure is projected to increase to 45,841 MW, or 15.9% (as of early 2024, the installed capacity of nuclear power plants was 29,543 MW – 11.9%).
The installed capacity of wind and solar power plants is expected to reach 7.6% (22,658.9 MW) by the end of 2042.
