Greece significantly reduced purchases of pipeline gas in Russia by more than 56% in the first quarter of 2023.
The operator of the Greek gas transmission system DESFA published the data on natural gas consumption in the first quarter of 2023 .
In the first quarter, Greece purchased 18.06 TWh of natural gas. Russian pipeline gas, which is imported to Greece through a hub in the town of Sidirokastro, accounted for about 19% of this volume during the reporting period. This is almost by 3 percentage points less than the supply of Azerbaijani gas via the Trans-Adriatic pipeline TAP.
“The entry point to Nea Mesimvria, through which the gas transported via the TAP pipeline is delivered, covers 21.60% of imports (3.90 TWh). It was followed by the Sidirokastro entry point (3.39 TWh), which accounted for only 18.78% of the total import volume, a significant decrease was recorded, by 56.71% compared to the first quarter of 2022,” the operator’s data says.
Azerbaijani gas is supplied to Greece via the TAP pipeline as part of the development of the “Shah Deniz-2” project. According to the 25-year contract (expires December 31, 2045 – Turan), Greece must import 1 bcm annually.
