EU has intensified construction of local gas pipelines on the south of Europe to connect this part with the energy system of the remaining EU member-states as a part of the energy concept “Connecting Europe,” Marosh Shefchovich, European Commissar for the Energy Union, said at the session of the EU Council of Energy Ministers while commenting on Russia’s refusal to build the South Stream project.
“We also must study the possibilities for additional investments into this infrastructure,” he added.
Claudio de Vinchente, Deputy Minister of Economic Development of Italy, which chairs the EU, said that the EU will consider the possibilities of construction of the energy bridge from the south of the Mediterranean region to diversify sources of energy resources.
“The Russian South Stream project could have become a very important possibility for diversification of the routes of gas export to the EU member states. We hoped that we could reach agreement in this project. But we should think not only about diversification of routes of energy resources, but also the sources of energy,” he believes.
