From 2004 2014 BP-Azerbaijan company has performed 116 monitoring of environment in Azerbaijan, said Amrita de Souza, senior specialist of the Environment Department of BP-Azerbaijan, at the conference “Caspian Shelf.”
He said 92 of those ecological monitoring has been conducted offshore, 38 ones onshore and 24 ones in the coastal zone.
“The company has been also working to prevent emergency situations similar to that, which happened on the BP platform in the Gulf of Mexico. We have recently completed implementation of a big project envisaging evaluation of the environment in all sensitive parts of Azerbaijan, especially the areas where the pipelines of the projects implemented by BP-Azerbaijan have been laid,” Souza said.
He said the work has been done to prevent possible oil spill. The company has submitted results of work to the Azerbaijan Ministry of Emergency Situations and SOCAR.
Souz also reminded that at present 2% of total volume of extracted associated gas is burnt on the torches of the oil platforms managed by BP-Azerbaijan company. “This is below the standard and is done for the safety reasons. Sometimes it is safer to burnt a certain volume of associated gas, than to try to utilize it,” Souza added.
