Every day the European Union member-states spend over 1 billion Euro for power import, said Dominique Ristory, head of the European Commission Energy Directorate. “At present EU’s foreign bill for power is over 1 billion Euro a day. We import 53% of total volume of consumed power. This is a lot. We import more than two thirds of consumed gas and approximately 90% of crude oil,” he said. One of the main gas suppliers to Europe is Gasprom, which covers almost one third of gas consumption in the EU. The European Union authorities repeatedly said that they would like to reduce dependence on power import and diversify the power sources to reduce dependence on Russia. The experts noted that EU will hardly be able to achieve significant results in this field in the near future.
