The European Commission supports the idea to create a single energy market in the European Union and hopes for a progress in this issue, said EC Vice President Joachim Almuniya at a press conference on Wednesday.
In April 2014 Polish Premier Donald Toosk proposed to create the European Energy Union. He believes that this mechanism must be opposed to Russia’s monopoly as the main exporter of energy resources to Europe and make EU more independent in its energy policy.
Herman van Rompey, head of the European Council, and French President Francois Hollande have supported Toosk’s idea. The Polish and French leaders are going to put the proposal for discussion of the EU summit in June 2014.
“We do not have a single energy market, we have 28 separate markets and different energy prices for the consumers. If we create a single market in the future, the differences will be eliminated,” Almuniya said. The possible term of formation of a single market and working out of legislation required for it has not been specified by him.
Ukraine also would like to join this Union, she owes Russia about $3.5 billion for supplied gas, said Ukrainian Premier Arsenii Yazenyuk in mid-May. He did not rule out that the EU will create such a union in the near future.
